DIY Yule Moon Wreath: A Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Own Moon Wreath

If you know me, you know I love a good seasonal craft. And while traditional holiday wreaths are beautiful, sometimes I want something a little different. Something a bit whimsical, a little witchy, and definitely something I can proudly hang in my home.

Enter the Yule Moon Wreath!

This beautiful crescent moon-shaped wreath combines fresh greenery, flowers, flowing ribbons, and a hanging crystal to create a unique piece of seasonal decor. It's the perfect DIY project for anyone who loves nature-inspired decorations, celestial designs, or just wants to try something new this holiday season.

If you've been searching for what to do in San Diego during the holidays, looking for craft classes in San Diego, or planning a creative get-together with friends, this is a fun project to add to your list.

What Is a Yule Moon Wreath?

Yule is a traditional midwinter celebration associated with the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Today, Yule-inspired decorations often incorporate natural elements like evergreen branches, dried flowers, pinecones, and symbols of the changing seasons.

A crescent moon wreath is a modern, creative take on seasonal decorating. While it isn't a required or traditional Yule decoration, its celestial shape and natural materials make it a beautiful addition to winter solstice celebrations or holiday decor.

I especially love that you can customize it to match your style. Go with deep greens and burgundy flowers for something moody, add gold ribbons for a festive look, or keep it simple with eucalyptus and neutral tones.

Supplies You'll Need for Your DIY Moon Wreath

Before we get started, let's gather our materials. I've included spots for my recommended supplies so you can easily recreate this project at home.

  • Wooden crescent moon wreath frame: The base of your project. [Shop wooden moon wreath frames]

  • Floral wire: To attach your flowers and greenery securely. [Shop floral wire]

  • Fresh flowers and greenery: Try eucalyptus, evergreen sprigs, baby's breath, or seasonal flowers. You can also use dried or faux florals for a longer-lasting wreath.

  • Decorative ribbons: Choose different colors, textures, and lengths for a layered look. [Shop decorative ribbons]

  • Crystal or hanging crystal bead: A beautiful finishing touch for your moon wreath. [Shop hanging crystals]

  • String or twine: For hanging your finished wreath. [Shop decorative twine]

Step 1: Tie Your Ribbons to the Bottom of the Moon

Start with your wooden crescent moon wreath frame and your favorite ribbons.

Cut several pieces of ribbon in different lengths and tie them along the bottom curve of the moon. I love mixing textures, like velvet, satin, and sheer ribbon, to create a more interesting look.

Let the ribbons hang freely, and don't worry about making everything perfectly symmetrical. Sometimes a little unevenness gives a handmade piece more character.

My tip: Pick two or three complementary colors instead of using every ribbon in your craft drawer. Trust me, I know how tempting that is.

Step 2: Add Fresh Flowers and Greenery

Now for my favorite part: bringing the moon to life with greenery and flowers.

Start by arranging your greenery along the wooden frame. You can follow the curve of the moon or concentrate your flowers along one side for a more dramatic, asymmetrical look.

Once you're happy with the placement, use floral wire to secure the stems to the wooden wreath. Wrap the wire around the stems and frame, making sure everything stays in place.

Next, layer in your flowers. You can use small blooms for a delicate look or larger flowers to create a statement piece.

There's really no right or wrong way to arrange them. Play around with the placement until you find something you love.

My tip: If you're using fresh flowers, make your wreath close to the day you plan to display it. Fresh greenery and flowers will eventually dry out, so dried or faux materials are better if you want to reuse your wreath year after year.

Step 3: Add a Hanging Crystal

This is the little detail that makes the whole wreath feel extra special.

Choose a crystal, crystal bead, or decorative pendant and attach it near the top arch of your moon using a piece of string or thin wire.

Let it hang into the open center of the crescent moon.

You can use a clear crystal for a simple, elegant look or choose a colored crystal that complements your flowers and ribbons.

Make sure your crystal is securely attached and doesn't pull the frame out of balance.

Step 4: Add Your Hanging String

Almost done!

Attach a sturdy piece of string or twine to the upper part of your moon wreath so you can hang it on a wall, door, or decorative hook.

Before hanging it, hold your wreath up and check the balance. You may need to adjust the string slightly so the moon hangs exactly how you want it.

And that's it! You've officially made your own DIY Yule Moon wreath.

Now find the perfect spot to show it off.
